  How to claim

Private Medical InsuranceCheck you're covered
Always check with your insurance company whether you are covered for each aspect of treatment beforehand - you are responsible for the bills if your policy doesn't cover it. Your insurance company will guide you through the process for making a claim. If you are in a company scheme, you will need to check whether you are covered for the treatment you require with the scheme co-ordinator and follow the scheme's claims process.

Getting a referral
Most medical treatments start with your GP referring you to a specialist. Insurance companies require a GP referral letter to be completed before they will consider funding any treatment. Insurers then normally request completion of a claim form by your consultant or GP, for which some GPs make a nominal charge.

Seeing the specialist
Your specialist will decide whether you need surgery or whether  further tests are required to diagnose your condition. Remember to stay in contact with your insurer to confirm that your treatment plan is covered.

Arranging treatment
If your specialist decides that you require surgery, you can access treatment with virtually no waiting at the Scottish Hernia Centre.  All you have to do is decide on a treatment time that is most convenient for you.

Who pays the bill?
Most hospitals and some specialists have their bill paid by the insurer, but others will send the bill to you for forwarding to your insurance company. Your insurer will tell you how they pay claims and you will also need to pay any policy excess that you’ve agreed to.
