   Hernia prevention

The vast majority of hernias develop through a combination of bad luck, be it from a weakness that some individuals are born with, or by developing a weakness with the passage of time. 

 The following measures, however, may reduce the risk of developing some hernias and may reduce pain and discomfort in existing hernias:

  • maintaining a reasonable weight
  • avoiding heavy lifting
  • avoiding constipation by eating a healthy high-fibre diet
  • following a moderate exercise program to maintain good abdominal muscle tone.
