An inguinal hernia appears as a lump or bulge in the inguinal or groin crease. In men, the protrusion may descend into the scrotum. Inguinal hernias occur when part of the small bowel, or other abdominal tissue protrudes through an area of weakness in the wall of the abdomen. A bilateral inguinal hernia is when an abnormal opening or defect occurs on both sides of the groin.
Over 70% of all hernias occur in the inguinal region and are most common in boys and men. Only 10% of cases affect women.
